A Week Already?

I do not believe a week has gone by already.  I think that's insane!  One of my teachers stopped me in carline today, which is what we do at the end of the day to pick up: the cars get into two long lines and the teachers call the students up and we get into our car.  Anyways, my former 3rd grade teacher told me as we were getting into the car, "I heard you're not coming back next year.  I'm going to be really sad!  Where are you going?"  I told her that Mom's homeschooling me, and she said, "Oh, that's interesting."  What's so bad about it?  She sounded disappointed, I guess--like she maybe thought it was because we didn't like my school.  We LOVE my school, but the tuition's really expensive and my mother wanted to try it.

On the topic of school, this week we started a unit on ancient China in our history class.  The first section is on the geography, which is usually the most boring section, but China's geography is pretty neat.  They have the Gobi Desert and the Himalayas, with the Huang He river (among others) and the lush, wetter southern part of the country.  We learned that the earliest, or neolithic, Chinese setters grew wheat and millet in the northeastern regions and rice in the south.  I think this'll be a really cool unit.  I'll go more into detail about our history class and the China unit later this weekend, because if I don't get off the computer now, I won't get dinner, because Mom's recipe is on here.

Happy Homeschooling!

Sick

We should be back at school today, but...I'm sick.  I've actually been sick since Friday evening, so I'm really disappointed that I'm not better already.  It pretty much stinks, especially since my little sister is sick now too!  I feel bad, even though there's nothing I could have done about it.  She's having a pretty rough time.  I'm just praying that nobody else in the family gets sick.

But why not be happy, right?  Of course right!  (Those of you who have watched Fiddler on the Roof, you know what I mean.  Remember Yente the matchmaker?)  So why not talk about books?  If you know me, you know I like to read.  A friend recommended the Nancy Drew series, which I haven't read in a while, so I picked a few up at the library and...wow!  I totally forgot how good they were, and I'm really loving them all of a sudden!  Some of my other favorite books--definitely oldies-but-goodies--are shown below.

The Harry Potter Series.  They are so good!  Well written, good story, I could go on and on.

The Percy Jackson Series.  If you haven't read them, please go immediately to your local library or bookstore and GET THEM NOW!

Series of Unfortunate Events--a little sad at times, because they're orphans, but hilarious!  Go Lemony Snicket!

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Series.  Just plain funny, I swear, these are so good!  But I think the fourth and fifth books are my least favorite...the first is the best by far!

So, these are my favorite books (only some--I have lots more!) and I've even busted some sickness boredom blues!  Well, happy reading!

Long Weekend!

We have a four day weekend!  I'm really happy, not just for the obvious reasons (no school for four days?  Yes, please!) but also I get to spend more time with my family, which I can't do as much when I have homework in every subject :(  I won't have trouble with not spending time with my family next year...I'll probably have too much!  I think I'll actually miss school a little, not just my awesome friends and teachers, but the actual "school experience".  But hey, homeschooling will be fun!  I'll make it fun!

On a somewhat different subject, for my school I go to now (in order to compare), I'm going to focus on a different subject each week, I think, and write about it on Saturday or Sunday.  I'll focus on what we did during the week, some of the homework assignments, and big projects coming up.  For instance, I might talk about Science Fair (which I need to get a move on) or my next big book report, maybe even a math test.  That way, when I look back, I'll see how "normal" school and homeschooling are different--and the same.

To Begin...

I should begin at the beginning.  A few weeks back, my parents visited an old friend, Jennifer Tan of Syrendell.  She's homeschooled her kids for a long time and gave us some pointers.  At that point, actually, my parents were still deciding about it, but Mrs. Tan really convinced them to, I think.  We're going to homeschool through Visions in Education, which is a public Charter School.  My brother is also getting homeschooled for kindergarten--I'm going into seventh.  For now, since I'm still going to my school (which I've been going to since preschool) I'll blog about what I'm doing there, to compare at the end of seventh grade.  Basically, this whole blog is to remember my first year of homeschooling, to keep track of what I've been doing, and to just have some fun!  Happy Homeschooling!
